Resources for Learning Languages Online
Monday, June 1st, 2009Online language learning has become a trend because of the rise of several language learning resources which are accessible anywhere on the planet as long as there is a solid internet connection. With just a bit of time every day, you can learn a language using available language tools and there is a wide range of languages you can choose to learn.
There are many advantages in learning languages online compared to traditional language courses in classrooms and
learning with home-study books. Online language learning courses often cost less than other methods since you will not have to spend on class fees or transportation. Language websites are available all the time which gives you the opportunity to learn on your own schedule and at your own pace; you’ll even have the chance to repeat lessons if you think you need to and you want to.
There are several ways to learn languages online and the effectiveness of each method relies on how motivated you are to learn your target language. The following are just few of the many online methods you could choose from:
- Distance learning through a university. There are some universities which offer online foreign language classes and instruction. Programs like this are sometimes offered with sessions with an instructor who can provide you with additional learning tips. Some universities even issue certificates after you have completed the course and meet the requirements. The only down side with this method is that it may be costly since universities do charge for their services.
- Online messaging. Online messaging or chatting is one of the most interesting ways to learn languages on the internet. This method may not be very helpful especially for those who are still new into learning a language since it requires some knowledge in the language in order to be able to “break the ice” with those who you will be chatting with. Chat rooms are excellent venues for language exchange and a lot of native speakers are willing to help you, just ask. Interaction in the chat room will enable you to write, read, and most likely speak your target language thus help you develop your language skills in various areas. The advantage of chat rooms is that most of them are free of charge, you just have to find a language exchange partners who are as interested of your native language in the same way you are interested in theirs.
- Online language articles. The internet is a treasure box of thousands, if not millions, of articles on various topics in different languages which you can read for free. These articles hold various information and by reading them you can learn about the basics of the language, like how sentences are constructed. With these articles, you need the motivation to stick to a specific schedule and you may need to supplement these articles with other learning tools since you will be only reading the language, not hearing it. This method is helpful but you would eventually need to interact with another speaker of the language for you to practice your sentence structure and pronunciations skills.
- Improve listening and speaking skills through pod casts. There are many good courses on pod casts which are available for download or listening online. Pod casts, can help you learn one step at a time then you can proceed to the next lesson if you have completed the initial ones successfully.
