English language plays a vital role in the lives of people nowadays. Since English is the language reckoned in international businesses and organizations already, it’s not surprising in this point of time that the number of people learning this language is increasingly progressing. In particular, Koreans are striving so hard to learn English that Americans and other native English speakers are liberally enjoying without the struggle.

Reading Grace Cho’s “Learning English in South Korea is no joke” in Weekly Online, I am amazed of knowing the South Korean’s status in their trend to English. She even stated there her personal experiences with how Koreans embrace English passionately. She was personally amused with the sights she saw in South Korea when her Australian-Korean friend asked her to roam around Hongik University area for shopping. There she saw a bar named “”Ho Bar,” a store called “Gangster,” and a club called “Boobi Boobi.” Her friend told her “Ho Bar” was short for “Host Bar” and “Boobi Boobi” is what Koreans call the way people dance at clubs. And not only that, they also have t-shirts printed with English sentences like “I would rich I will not ever NEVER not a tomito” or “The moon in the sky there are a lot of diamonds.” For a person who knows even Basic English surely would react to its construction of sentences. This is, in fact, humorous but true.

Anything English is a trend for Koreans, just like Grace Cho stated: “Koreans are crazy about learning English…” But you know, despite of those inane terms on printed shirts, most of them speak English language proficiently. Though some have a hard time coping up with the accent, they are still capable of speaking and writing the language accurately. In fact, they start their language learning in their elementary years. And oftentimes, students spend their time learning English in tutoring academies, language schools, or just simply studying at home. People spend lots of money just to learn English especially for parents towards their children. That’s why employment for English teachers in South Korea is such an in-demand.

You are fortunate when you are fluent in speaking English. Though you will be counted as one of the millions of English speakers around the world, this is an advantage to you. You will have a greater chance for foreign employment and meet different people from various races and get the chance learn their culture. Isn’t it amazing? It all started from learning foreign languages, predominantly the English language.

Listening: The Most Essential Skill in Communication

Dog Looking at and Listening to a Phonograph, ...
Image by Beverly & Pack via Flickr

If you could recall, an article was written in this Abroad Languages site entitled Four Essential Skills wherein it explains that communication indeed has four essential skills, namely Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

As an avid learner in languages, you’d probably say that the most important skill among these four is the speaking skill, right? Since speaking is the most audible and visible skill among the four, it is often thought that when you are good in speaking, you are then good in communication as well.

But do you know that Reading skill is not necessarily the most essential skill in communication? Yes, you read it right. Reading is not the most important skill because it actually makes Listening as the most important one. Why?

If you thoroughly understand the concept of communication, speaking alone does not necessarily make communication successful. Yes, language is needed as a medium for such communication, and aside from making such language spoken; it has to be heard as well. Failure to receive what is being tried to say also means failure for communication to take place.

Why it is important to have good listening skills? Written by Dawn Rosenberg McKay, “it actually allows one to make sense of and understand what another person is saying. In other words, listening skills allow you to understand what someone is ‘talking about’.”

Besides, when a person actually knows what is being talked about in a conversation, language barriers are eventually eradicated. You see, language barriers do not necessarily occur when two people are speaking different languages. Sometimes, language barrier take place when the receiver of the message does not necessarily comprehend what the speaker is trying to say. So no matter how good the speaker speaks his language, if it’s not being understood, it’s still in vain.

So the next time you learn another language, make sure you fully comprehend what is being taught to you. In a language school setting, language learners don’t just practice what their language teacher taught them by speaking the words. It must be understood first; therefore the learner has to listen.

Top Three Most Difficult Languages to Learn

You’d probably feel enthusiastic when you’ll know what are the easiest languages and feel like motivated to learn it because you know that it will be learned in just a short span of time. But to know the most difficult languages; does that encourage people at all? Well, the purpose of writing this article is not to let the people “unlearn” these difficult languages nor despise them but to let the people give options into what language they can actually choose. Does this make any sense?

There are lots of reasons a person has why he would learn another foreign language. He could learn it for travel or employment purposes, for expansion of one’s knowledge, and many more. Yet if you are the learner who wants to learn foreign languages only for the purpose of knowing “another” second language, then this article is for you. Of course, you will shun the language that will take so much of your time, effort, and money, unless it has something to do with a mandate that you will compulsorily do. Therefore the top three languages that will be mentioned below are, sad but true, advised not to be taken so easily. So here are the three of the most difficult languages to learn based on the article edited by Radmanovac on April 16th this year.

  • Japanese

Alphabets on this language are honestly complicated for a beginner especially when your primary language envelops the English Alphabet. Not to disappoint learners but according to the Foreign Service Institute of the US Department of State, Japanese is the hardest language in the world for English speakers to learn. Japanese has two different alphabets with forty-six characters each, compared to English which only contains twenty-six letters. All these including the numerous and different Japanese characters will be learned by learners from time to time. Aside from that, Japanese grammar is taken much time to learn. There are at least fifty ways to modify Japanese verbs wherein English has only three.

In learning Japanese, a learner must take a real-good effort to apprehend everything that was taught to him. Frankly speaking, only determined learners with comprehensive methods in learning can really get to know Japanese. If you are one who learned Japanese fluently, then congratulations!

  • Russian

Compared to Japanese, Russian is the lesser difficult language. The U.S. Department group of languages for the diplomatic service labels Russian in the Category 2, which possesses a requirement of 1100 hours of class work. They use the modified version of Cyrillic Alphabet. The figures below corresponds the English and Cyrillic Alphabets.

А   Б   В   Г   Д   Е   Ё   Ж   З   И   Й   К   Л   М   Н   О

/a/ /b/  /v/  /ɡ/ /d/ /je/ /jo/  /ʐ/  / z/  /i/  /j/  /k/  /l/  /m/  /n/  /o/

П   Р   С   Т   У   Ф   Х   Ц   Ч  Ш  Щ   Ъ  Ы   Ь  Э  Ю  Я

/p/  /r/  /s/  /t/  /u/ /f/  /x/  /ts/ /tɕ/  /ʂ/  /ɕɕ/  /-/  [ɨ]  /-/ /e/ /ju/  /ja/

This may seem a little difficult at first but if earners are already familiar with it, learners will discover its relativity to French and other Western languages.

  • Arabic

This language is verbalized only by more than 530 million people, often spoken by people along the Middle East, North Africa. Just like Japanese, Arabic belongs to the Category 3 of the U.S. Department group of languages for the diplomatic service. This language has a learning requirement of 2,200 hours. Their grammar, conjugations, voices, and arrangement of words are too complicated to learn. Even the word as simple as “goodbye” is written in Arabic as مَعَ السَّلامَةِ. Seeing its figure, you don’t even identify which of it is the letter or the syllable. So this language takes a lot of time and effort in learning.

These three languages are mentioned not to discourage people from learning it due to its difficulty. In fact, this has taken by some to be a challenge to aim. Based on specifics, some people who tried to learn the language concluded that it is not as difficult as it seem to be. At first, it may require adjustments but later on, they found it enjoyable to learn.

Personally, even if standards categorize a language of its difficulty, this is not necessarily the issue. No matter how difficult the language seems to be, if learners are dedicated and passionate to learn it, they will learn it and eventually, they will be fluent to it. For a devoted learner, there is no such thing as “difficult language”.

Learning Languages through Music and Media

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Numerous ways and methods are continuously being used in order to make language learning easy and efficient. Presently, a new method is employed for children in learning foreign languages, and it is through the use of music and media.

Susanna Zaraysky, a famous polyglot author guides children learners into learning foreign languages by using music and media as learning tools. This covers the influence of TV, radio, film, and music in a comprehensive learning technique they can easily acquire. If children are unmotivated in their language class then this kind of method will encourage them to learn with fun and innovation.

According to Zaraysky, this kind of method is easy to attain even if parents don’t speak the foreign language their children are learning. This makes the influence of music and media an effective tool to learn foreign languages easier and more proficient. Even Susanna Zaraysky herself learned seven languages such as Russian, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Serbo-Croatian, and Italian through music, TV, radio, movies, and internet. She and the other learners proved that this kind of method is effective.

Here are some of the tips she suggested on how to learn foreign languages using music and media.

  • Tune your ears

Learning another language is like learning another dance like cha-cha from a familiar dance like waltz. Let the learners, particularly the kids take in the sounds of the language as though they were listening to a new piece of music. Despite the children’s status as beginners, they are still capable of learning it through listening.

  • Listen, and then talk

Search for music in the learners’ target language, even if they still don’t understand the lyrics at first. They may start singing along without even knowing what they’re singing, but they don’t only just learn the language’s rhythm, but they’re learning the vocabulary as well. In their stage, they don’t necessarily need to understand all the words. They just need to listen as they continually absorb the sounds.

  • Write the lyrics as you listen

Once the kids are familiar to the lyrics already, allow them to repeat the lyrics to you. If they are capable of writing, then let them write it as well. Compare the lyrics they wrote or speak to the original song and see how progressive their learning is.

  • Imagine the lyrics on your head

Encourage the children to think what the song is talking about and let them think or create a story about it. They will retain the words of the songs better when they understand how the song goes than just memorizing its vocabulary. With this, their learning is quicker since children are imaginative in nature. They understand the whole message of the song while improving their learning capability in foreign languages.

  • Draw the story

After letting them to imagine the story, allow them to draw it as well. By making use of their drawing skills, they will be fortifying the song in their mind. According to Zaraysky, visual reinforcement is important in making the words of the song be real.
