Characteristics you need to know About Young Language Learners

How effective is it really for young learners to learn a new language? Does it really make it easier for them to acquire a new language when they are enrolled to foreign language schools? For the past articles related to young learners learning new languages comparing adults, the younger ones always show more excellent results when it comes to progression.

But, according to Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), there are some characteristics about young language learners—particularly to those who are learning English language that are important; thus useful for educators to keep it in mind.

You want to know the details? Here are the lists.

Young children’s first language is not yet fully developed
According to the source, children between 5 and 10 years old are still acquiring the structures of their first language. It was even detailed that children younger than 5 years old have many aspects of their first language have not yet fully developed. “So while older learners have the foundation of a fully developed first language when they begin acquiring a new language, younger English language learners are working toward two milestones at the same time: the full development of their native language and the acquisition of English.”

The writer emphasized this: “While children are perfectly capable of acquiring two or more languages, and there is no evidence that this process produces any negative consequences—in fact, in many parts of the world it is the norm, rather than the exception, for children to grow up bilingual or multilingual—educators must keep in mind that young children do not have a fully developed native language on which to base the learning of a second. Children may not know certain vocabulary words, grammatical structures, or other language features in their native language before they learn them in English, in which case merely translating a word or phrase may be of little help to them.

Children need to develop their native language(s) along with English
My Dad once argued with me how young learners should not integrate a foreign language along with their native language. He exclaimed that it would only confuse the young learner. Well, as for the source of this article, I strongly contradict such thought.

Young learners can naturally learn their native language due to various immersion factors like communication with parents, socializing with other people along the community, and so on. So in order to develop their native language skills fully, young English language learners need support in both their native language and English.

No matter how young your child may be, as long as he is as typical as you and me, he will not have so many difficulties in leaning English language. If you want, you can let him go to a language school for a more comprehensive way of learning.

Attitude Marks a Learner’s Progress in Learning English Language

Learners who choose English as the language to be learned often choose to learn English at language school because they know they will learn more. Yes, we cannot deny the fact that there is what we term as “independent learners” where they can and are able to learn English by themselves. They are capable of learning English and even improve it by just reading English articles and novels, watching English movies, immersing in English culture, and so on. But most students really prefer going to schools. It’s the most sufficient and so far the most efficient way they know in acquiring English excellently.

Yet, during the learning process, a learner will really undergo such difficulty in acquiring English. Yes, English is so far the easiest language to be learned but still some learners will still find difficulties in acquiring it. What could be the problem with it?

A forum was posted in a certain site where a student is wondering of an efficient method in learning English. This is what the post said: “I’m studying English. But my English ability is low and I’m so tired more and more. I know that language is not improving for short time. Time has past 6 months since I started to study English. Maybe I think that my studying method have to be corrected. What should I do? Nowadays I have studied English going English institute. I have a lot of homework and task almost everyday, so I do not have my private studying time…It’s my lame excuse, But If you know efficiently learning English method, tell me, please? I will wait your intellectual response.”

Reading this post made me think that actually, it’s not the learner that has a problem with his learning process. It’s actually how he responds to it. That’s why attitude is a very important factor to consider in deciding a learner’s progress in learning English language.

No matter how prestigious his foreign language school may be, if his attitude marks laziness and mediocrity, then the excellence of the school would be counted as vain. If the learner on the other hand is showing enthusiasm and excellence in their learning, no matter what learning method he used, he will acquire the efficiency of English that he desires.

Take note of this respond to the post above in italic form: “I don’t agree that your English ability is low. For one thing, I understand what you are saying. Also, you have surely come a long way from when you didn’t know anything about it. I will make my advice general. First, be patient with yourself. It is not unusual for someone to reach a point where he doesn’t seem to be making much progress. Second, take every opportunity to practice what you know. If you think it will help, I will correct any errors I find in your postings. Your English is much better than my Korean will ever be.”

Agree?

The Wrong Way to Learn Spanish Language

From the very beginning, this site has always been giving tips and guidelines in letting learners learn foreign languages effectively. When it comes to learning methods, this site has also been giving insights as to what are the latest and the most effective ways in letting learners acquire the language easier.

letter in spanish language

Image via Wikipedia

All through the blogs posted for the past days, we’ve been implementing the proper ways of learning foreign languages, especially when one is interested to learn Spanish language. But as I browse on the updated methods of acquiring the language, I have found out that there is actually a wrong way to do it. Is that so?

According to Wikibooks, there is. The wrong way to learn Spanish is actually a methods applied outside the standard methods of academia. When learners tend to focus learning on doing it, it is actually considered the wrong way. The method has a textbook, if anyone wants to pursue it; however, it is used as a guide rather than the main teaching method.

Allow me to quote what the source of this article is stating: “Most learning in The Wrong Way to Learn Spanish method takes the form of games and entertainment : trivia, live game shows played by the student, role-playing, jokes, and stories. Because it’s made based on fun-filled mnemonics, learning Spanish in this way would be the same as a kid who is just having a good time, while building up one’s knowledge on the Spanish vocabulary.”

Do you personally agree with this?

One of the lessons tackled in this topic is its First Six Words. Such words are enlisted below:

  • Zorro means fox. (zorro).

Imagine a fox in a zorro mask.

  • Gato means cat. (Gah-toh).

Imagine a cat with big gaps between his toes.

  • Perro means dog. (Peh-roh).

Imagine a dog jumping over a pair of rowboats.

  • Oso means bear. (oh-so)

Imagine spotting a huge bear looking at you, and running away because it is ‘oh-so big.’

  • Camarera means waitress. (kama-reh-rah)

Imagine a waitress at a restaurant offering to take a picture with your camera as you hang out with your friends.

  • Chico means boy. (Chee-ko)

Think “It would be a Chick (i.e. female), but it isn’t, because it has an o on the end, which makes it masculine, ergo, a guy, or boy.”

So in order for you not to get confused if the learning methods are right or wrong, the safest way to do is to choose language schools as your options. You will be assured that you will never get wrong with it.
