As somebody who is interested in learning languages and learning languages abroad at that, you might be wondering what could be in store for you once you go through your language learning venture.  You might be cautious and might be wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of learning your target language in the country where it is spoken.  Read on and know some of the pros and cons of learning languages abroad. 

Learning languages abroad is fun, exciting, and a wonderful educational experience.  The following are some points you might want to consider as you think about studying foreign languages abroad:

The Pros:
  Language Immersion.  The main goal in learning languages abroad is to be fully immersed in the language; that is, being able to learn the language in its natural environment.  If you go abroad to pursue your language learning studies, you will be able to use the language frequently during your stay in the country.  You will be able to exercise the language skills you learn in your language school as you actively converse and interact with the local community.
 Discover History.  When you choose to learn languages abroad, you will have the opportunity to discover the history of the place.  It is a wonderful and fruitful experience if you learn more about the background of the place, how it was is the past and how it evolved to what it is today.  If your language learning destination happens to be a place where an important historical event happened, that is one place you should not miss to learn more of.
 Explore Cultures.  As you go about in your everyday life abroad while learning your target language, you will have the chance to learn more about different cultures.  Aside from the history of the place, its culture defines its beauty.   Learning a new language in the place where it is spoken can help you understand more about its people, its traditions, and its customs.
 Try Something New.  If you pursue a language course abroad, you will have the chance to try a lot of new things!  A foreign place will surely spark a lot of interests in you and almost everything will surely be exciting to try!  You will have the chance of your life to try out and savor the local cuisine, taste the local wines and drinks, do the activities that locals do, play the local sports, and a whole lot more.  Never be afraid to take risks and try something new!

The Cons:
 Initial Shock.  Let’s admit it, when we travel to another place which is an unfamiliar territory, we tend to experience culture shock.  The surroundings, the languages, the food, the people, the climate, everything will seem strange during your first few days in a different country.  The best way to avoid culture shock is to do research on the place before your planned language travel.  Going to your destination equipped even with just the basic knowledge about the place can help you a lot as you assimilate yourself into it.
 Costly Expenses. Learning a language in another country could be costly in the way that you have to pay for your transportation, accommodation, food, and language courses.  If you do not have an ample budget or grants or scholarships as educational aid, you will surely have to shell out more money but if you sign up for programs which help you organize everything for a reasonable cost, you can save more!  Most language schools abroad will help you organize things from your board and lodging to your transportation and to your language classes and some can even help you organize excursions and tours.  If you do not want to spend too much, they might be able to help you work around your fixed budget.
 Language Difficulties.  If you are a total beginner of the language that you are set to learn, you might be able to experience initial language difficulties upon arrival.  You might have a hard time understanding signs, directions, information, and conversations.  However, since you are going there to learn the language, don’t worry too much about it.  As time goes on, you will be able to adjust to the language that is if you are really eager to learn it!

It has been said many times over that the best way to learn a language is go to the place where it is spoken in order to absorb it in your system naturally.  There are more good points than bad ones in studying a foreign language abroad since it can help you reap a lot of benefits.  For sure it will be a fun and educational language learning and travel experience rolled into one!
