Activities in Munich

Discover Munich in good company and speak German after class. BWS Germalingua offers you three activities each week for relaxation, fun and self-cultivation… and to get to know the other students better.

Cultural activities, tours of Munich’s main attractions and excursions are on the program, but also parties, themed nights and outings.

During your free time, you will also appreciate the beautiful scenery surrounding Munich, the large parks and the multitude of sports that you can play here.

It doesn’t matter whether you would like to discover traditional or modern attractions and activities in Munich, or you just want to learn the German language because this city has got it all for you!  You will never be disappointed after visiting Munich. If you want to go shopping, Munich offers you numerous shopping centres!  People love the big shopping centres in Munich because they often offer unlimited parking and lots of restaurants and shops.  The three biggest shopping malls in Munich are the Olympia Einkaufszentrum, Einkaufs-Centrum Neuperlach, and the Riem Arcaden.  Elite labels and current fashion trends are embodied in these malls as well as almost anything that enhances and inspires life like the latest beauty products, market fresh foods, furniture, high tech gadgets and individual accessories.  German cuisine or exotic gastronomic delights are available in the malls’ many restaurants. These mall’s are also easy to access by subway or car.

If you want to know more about Munich’s culture and history, visit some of its famous landmarks and museums!  In the city centre is the Marienplatz or Mary’s Square, a large open square named after the Marian column in its centre.  The column was dedicated to the Virgin for deliverance from foreign occupation and the plague.  The Marienplatz also has the Old Town Hall and the New Town Hall which contains the Rathaus Glockenspiel.  After exploring the Marienplatz, you can easily visit the nearby Peterskirche or St. Peter’s Church, which is the oldest church in Munich.  Another church nearby is the Heiliggeistkirche or The Church of the Holy Ghost which looks down upon the most popular market of Munich the Viktualienmarkt.  The two-towered church which is the most famous landmark in Munich is the Frauenkirche which is also located in the city centre.  There are also some other nice churches in Munich created either in the Renaissance, Gothic, Baroque and Rococo styles which are worth a visit.  If you opt to visit one of the various museums in Munich, there are quite a few to choose from.  Start with the Deutsches Museum which is one of the largest and oldest science museums with massive collections of prehistoric fossils, rocks, bones and many more.  If you are an art lover, Munich is the place to be because it has several important art galleries most of which are in the Kunstareal, exhibit works of art masters like Raphael, Dürer, and Rubens.  The completion of the Egyptian Museum in the Kunstareal will add even more excitement to your visit.  A lot of Gothic art works can be found in the Munich City Museum.

Frauenkirche

Munich also has a lot of parks in which you can take long walks or go biking. Close to the city centre is the Englischer Garten or the English Garden which is one of the world’s largest urban parks. Other large green spaces are the modern Olympiapark and Westpark, the city’s oldest park the Hofgarten, and the city’s zoo the Tierpark Hellabrunn which is in the southern part of Munich.  Another noteworthy park is the Ostpark which houses one of the largest swimming areas in Munich, the Michaelibad.  During the summer, you can also try surfing on the river Isar.

If you want to explore Munich at night, be delighted by the city’s vibrant nightlife!  Kultfabrik and Optimolwerke were former industrial areas which have been converted to host various pubs and discos.  The Hofbräuhaus which is one of the oldest breweries in Munich is another place you should have seen.

If you are more adventurous and would want to try traditional German cuisine, try the Munich specialty the Weißwürste which are white sausages served with freshly baked Brezen or pretzels and dipped in sweet mustard. You should also try the Leberkäs, another delicious specialty which you can taste in many of Munich’s cozy restaurants. Never leave Munich without tasting its famous beer the Weißbier which is the specialty of Bavaria. The most popular beer in Munich these days is the translucent gold colored Helles. Starkbier is the strongest Munich beer and it is popular during the Lenten strong beer season. Munich has a lot of beer gardens in which you will definitely feel welcome because of its lively music and people! If you can, do not miss the world-famous festival of Munich, the Oktoberfest!
