Barcelona, is the second largest city in Spain and one the most important economic and cultural places in Europe.

The city, founded by the Romans at the end of the 1st century BC soon became an economic and political centre of the Western Mediterranean, reaching its splendor from the 13th to the 15th centuries. The Gothic Quarter is the impressive heritage of those days.

After a period of decline, the recovery began I n the 19th century with the arrival of the textile industrial revolution, still today one of the most important economic activities in the region. The economic revival brought a cultural renaissance represented in The Catalan Art Nouveau (named Modernisme) and culminated with an urban renewal. The Eixample district is a showcase of this modernist art, whose most eminent artist is architect Antoni Gaudí.
