Seville is political, artistic and cultural capital of Andalusia. This southern city is one of the most beautiful of Spain and the fourth largest and populated.
Located on the plain of River Guadalquivir, Seville is a millenary city founded by Romans with the name of Hispalis, although the legend says it was founded by Roman mythology's hero Hercules.
Seville was taken by the Muslims in 712 who stayed here until Catholic Reconquest in 1248. Moorish cultural, artistic and urban influence is very strong in Seville, showcased in many buildings, the urban design of the historic district, the fortified city wall, the Cathedral tower (built up from the Minaret of the original grand mosque) and the Alcazar, the old Muslim Palace.
Seville's golden age started with 1492 Christopher Columbus expedition to the New World. When Spain begun to trade with the Americas, the harbor by the Guadalquivir became the distributing point of all imported goods before being distributed throughout the rest of the world. By the 18th century, when Spanish Empire lost importance, the city went into economic decline.
